What Social Media Subscribers Think: 10 Reminders

Episode 1 of the Social Media Pearls Internet radio show discussed, “What is social media?” from a Subscriber’s perspective (link to show). I certainly had a few  ”Ah ha” moments.

In the video-clip below, I share an overview of the show.

Here are the 10 Reminders My Subscribers shared with our listeners:

  1. Make the language less technical.
  2. Zero comments does not mean zero engagement; visitors are cautious about comments especially with the sense of permanency related to comments.
  3. Quick, succinct and valuable content is a winning combination.
  4. Make your social practice  human and fun.
  5. Social connectivity is still rated as a high value for participating
  6. Professional development and How Tos are valuable topics for subscribers.
  7. Good content curation is highly valued.
  8. Blog with good storytelling- consistently.
  9. Polls presents a quick alternative to commenting.
  10. Subscribers are concerned about the level of control they may or may not have on their information which is one of the reasons they may not comment.
Can you relate? Do share your perspective.
Cheers!

#SocialMediaPearls Internet Radio Episode 2: What Is Social Media In The Workplace?

This is the second episode in the series, asking the question ” What is social media?”. However this time, we focus on social media in the workplace. Joining me for this topic are my guests Christine Mcleod, Chief Possibilities Officer and Founder of IMPACT99 and  Pam Ross, Chief Experience Officer and Partner of IMPACT99; both are Human Resources, Business Leaders with a wealth of knowledge in their field. I met both Christine and Pam at the IMPACT 99 conference last year. A jammed packed conference that totally energized its audience. Read my post on that amazing event. So I am thrilled that they will join me for this episode!

Pam Ross, Chief Experience Officer

Christine Mcleod, Chief Possibilities Officer

There has been a lot of press on social media use in the workplace – from its official to unofficial use for business.  We will surface the current perceptions of social media in the workplace and offer a definition from a people practice and organizational culture perspective. This will be an insightful conversation about the current organizational trends and “ownership” of social media. We will attempt to answer the question of why People Managers and Human Resources Professionals need to build their social media digital IQ; how it can be a valuable asset for both the business and employees. We will have a healthy discussion on personal branding versus business branding and the implications of social media to the organization’s culture.

So join me on May 24th, on Voice America, the business channel, at 5pm PST / 8pm EST for this episode.

Are you asking the following questions: “What is social media curation?” and “How does it add value?” Are you like many business owners trying to get your head around curation and the associated benefits? Well I have come to realize, you are not alone!

Patients Like Me: A Pioneer in Social Networks For Good

I booked-marked this video clip for sometime.

Not only do I think it is inspiring but it certainly broke ground on building a virtual community when the concept was somewhat embryonic. Continue Reading…

Google’s Social Offering is Not Google Plus. Social Integration is The Game.

Well I know that title has some people going! :)

I have stopped counting how many times I have been in discussions with people who have said they don’t like Google Plus as a social network or believe it is just a fad. What is eye-opening is that when  I ask them, “Have you actually used it?” The answer has been “ Well I went on and came off after a day or two ”. How can you possibly make an objective evaluation without really testing the environment?

It seems to me that social media enthusiasts either sit in the Google Plus camp or the Facebook camp. There is this great divide. I am thinking – why do I have to choose? I am pretty clear how I interact with my Facebook network and although I am still figuring out the optimal use of Google Plus, the two sites provide different experiences. Furthermore, I think Google Plus is just one component of Google’s plan on the social arena. Continue Reading…

Culture of Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter Social Sites

Some time ago, I asked my network:

“How would you describe the culture of the big three social networks?”

I was both amused and intrigued by the responses. I thought I would share them today in this post. Here are the highlights with some editorial license on my part of course.

Facebook

  • Family and Friends.
  • The culture helps to connect people who know each other at a deeper level than the other major networks.
  • Sharing with people you know or who have connected else where and now want to get to know you better.
  • Sharing life’s musings and casual pastimes.
  • When used for business, it is a business-to-consumer contact: still on a casual connection targeted to building a more casual relationship.
  • A casual playground that includes students, parents, neighbours, loved-ones, old school friends, people coming out to play, professionals and grandparents.
  • If there was a dress code, it would be very casual, T-shirts and jeans.
  •  If beverage was served, it would be beer and/or cola. Continue Reading…

Employer Access To Your Facebook Profile

I continue to hear stories about employers demanding access to employee  Facebook profiles -who then have to “suffer” the consequence. More recently I saw this cartoon and thought I would post it on my Facebook page to see what the general thinking was on the topic. By all means, check it out.  Generally speaking, the comments are very much aligned to my own.

Your Facebook profile allows you to set your privacy setting, so anything that is not set for public viewing, is NOT for employer consumption and you should NOT be bullied to giving access either.  You still have the right to select who you friend on Facebook. Period. If you are asked, politely but firmly decline the request. Continue Reading…

18 Social Networks For PetLovers, Owners & Pets

pet lovers, owners and pets social networks

As part of my niche social network series, today I am going to cast a light on social networks for pets! Yes, that’s right, social media networks for Pets-Lovers, Owners and their pets. With over 170 million dog and cat owners in North America alone, there is clearly a strong social community centered around pets.

Pet-owners naturally conjugate- whether it is because of their daily walks, or for pet-shows, or for just comparing notes- this community is very passionate about their pets! So taking these conversations to a social network seems a natural next step. Many pet social networks not only provide forums, resources, and expert help, but they also provide owners with the ability to showcase their pets by developing pet profiles, creating groups, exchanging photos and videos. Furthermore, many of these networks have introduced gaming to increase the interaction, fun and benefits for their membership. Continue Reading…

40 Social Media Curation Sites and Tools

Last month I shared 40+ networks that you could consider depending on your niche or interests. As part of my commitment to this community, I shared that I will  expand on this list throughout 2012. So here is the first addition to that build!  The topic- Curation!

I thought I would focus on curation because a) I have a favorite site and b) there has been a  lot of “press” on Pinterest  as a curation tool  and as a result I thought the timing was right.  However before I list the sites let’s talk curation.

What is social media curation?

Today,  with the exponential growth of social networks and blogs,  it can be overwhelming searching for information on the internet. As a result, the act of filtering, selecting, reviewing and providing commentary with a perspective on an article, or collection of articles, have become increasingly important. This is known as social media curation. Continue Reading…
